"Bosley"

March 2023

CASE OF THE MONTH

Dr Cecilia with Bosley

Just over a month ago, Bosley came into the clinic as his owner was very concerned that he wasn’t his normal, bright and happy self. She had noticed that he wasn’t behaving normally, he was taking himself off into the garden to hide and was vomiting quite frequently so she rushed him into the clinic. She mentioned that he wasn’t interested in his food – a very worrying symptom in a Labrador!! Dr Cecilia examined Bosley and agreed that something wasn’t right at all – so admitted him to hospital to further investigate . . .

Bosley was very flat and quite dehydrated, so he was immediately placed on intravenous fluids and given pain relief. The next step was to look at his blood work to see if there were any indicators of why he was so sick there – they were mostly normal – giving us no clues as to what this was!!

Dr. Cecilia took x-rays of his abdomen and the culprit was found!!! Bosley had not one, but two bones stuck in his tract! Bosley then underwent surgery with Dr’s Cecilia and Kirstin to remove the bones – one was in his stomach and one was in his small intestine – this one was caught just in time as it was not far off cutting the intestine open from the inside! Bosley ended up being in hospital for 4 days, on constant infusions of both fluids, pain relief and anti-nausea medication to try and keep his pain under control and get him eating again – it was quite the task for the team!

On Day 4 he finally decided that he was ready to leave and was eating really well so he went home to his owner to be closely watched – as these surgery patients are not declared “out of the woods” until 2 weeks post-op. Luckily Bosley came through with flying colours and was given the all clear two weeks later. We are so lucky to get to see him back to his bright, happy self and love when he comes for visits – we love you beautiful Bosley!!
